New job, new 'do

New photos are up on my Shutterfly site- the link is at the bottom of this page ("My pics").

Also, my new job at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children is detailed here. My days will be very much described by the "Inpatient" link. I have been summoned for a criminal background check and fingerprinting. Luckily my apartment's management company didn't catch the DUIs and that other unfortunate incident in Boston earlier this year ;) So hopefully neither will VCU. I'm just kidding. I'm as upstanding as citizens get!

Yesterday, I got a much-needed haircut at my favorite salon in Austin. I couldn't get in with Francesca, my usual stylist. So I made an appointment with Craig, a senior stylist (a desgination which subsequently translated into loads of money- I was warned on the phone that "haircuts are $150 with Craig.") If you had seen my split ends, unfashionably long and dehydrated hair, you would've said "okey doke" too, and so I braved the South Congress/Car show traffic and arrived at 4:00. I think the whole transformation started at 4:30, because, as I was informed by the spritely young man behind the front desk (with newly shorn faux hawk), Craig works in NYC as well, and all the Austinites were trying to get in before he left, and thus the wait. Somehow I began to feel self conscious about my sloppily painted toenails, and lack of make up. I mean the reverence with which Craig's name was even spoken made me feel like I was going to be in the presence of a hair god. E.g. I was the Wacoan who happened to need a late afternoon appointment and was thrown into the schedule completely unawares of who was going to be tending to the mess on my head. Then I decided that I have a Master's degree, and have almost completed my doctorate, and have no reason to be feeling self conscious!

Anyway, I was introduced to the concept of a curly hair hair cut, a phrase that has never been uttered to me before. Apparently a whole technology of cutting and styling naturally curly hair has emerged, and it was described to me almost as a lifestyle change that I could embrace if I so chose. What the hell. Curly hair hair cut it was, then the shampoo/conditioning, then the regime surrounding the styling products, and then the actual styling. What I love about Bo Salon is that in each of my experiences there, the stylists have taught me a number of things about my hair, and/or make up- like how to play up features, what I shouldn't do- it's all very non-threatening and friendly. Somehow it makes me feel more inclined to pay them large amounts of money- I mean if I can get a lesson AND a haircut, all the better for me! But the curly hair hair cut was truly more than a lesson. It was a comittment. Craig even said to the front desk guy "Steve, I'm gonna need you to work with Diana on the Deva hair products." As I sat under a hair dryer for phase 1 of styling, Steve approached me with a rolling tray (think dessert cart) of 5 products and a TWO PAGE document of typed instructions. To make a long story shorter, I walked out with a new lifestyle: the curly hair lifestyle. I was assured that I would always have the option to blow out my hair, but adherence to the new regime would make over my curly haired life. I have to be honest, I love it. I love it more than Carrie Bradshaw's hair.

And with actual make up...

Well anyway, I consider it a success. Nothing is worse than coming home from the salon and thinking "Eh." or Even worse than that "I hate it!!!" The best part is, I can replicate it.
